Cut That Crease

Throughout my daily beauty account lurking one trend that I noticed from almost all makeup artists and beauty bloggers is the cut crease look. This look is huge on Instagram, Snapchat, twitter and on YouTube tutorials. This technique is known to make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

The trend began way back in the days of black and white film in order to draw attention to the actress’s eyes but was a more modest take on the trend. Essentially this look includes a lighter eyeshadow shade on the eyelid and a darker eyeshadow shade above the lid crease.

Follow the steps below to Cut your crease:

  1. Prep your eyelids with an eyeshadow primer
  2. A light shade of eyeshadow should be applied all over the eyelid, up to your brow
  3. Use a dark shadow or even eyeliner to draw a V-shape from the start of your inner crease to the outer corner of the eye
  4. Use a crease or blending brush to blend the line that was just drawn
  5. Begin to blend the shadow slightly above the crease
  6. Further, define your eye by adding eyeliner to your lash line
  7. Add the same eyeshadow used in the crease along the bottom of the lash line
  8. Final step layer on some false lashes for even more drama

To Bake or Not to Bake?

Have you ever wondered how Kim Kardashian gets a flawless finish and highlight underneath her eyes and below her contour? One word: baking.

Baking refers to letting translucent powder sit on your face for roughly five to ten minutes. This allows for the translucent powder to set your foundation and concealer so that there is no creasing in your makeup. After the translucent powder has set simply sweep the powder off of your face for a flawless finish.

Baking originally began in the drag community but since highlighting and contouring has become a trend, baking has become the perfect finish. This technique can often be confused by highlighting with the main difference being highlighting uses shimmer and baking is matte.

The best setting powder in the game

Steps to baking the perfect face:

  1. Apply Concealer to your under eye area

It should be applied from underneath your eye to the apples of your cheek and blended with a damp beauty sponge.

  1. Add translucent powder

Using the same damp beauty sponge as in the previous step, dip the sponge into the loose powder and pat it on to the under eye area, chin, middle of the forehead, bridge of your nose and under the hollows of your cheek bones. You should use a generous amount of powder so that it looks caked on. Let this sit for ten minutes.

  1. Brush it Off

Using a powder/fluffy brush sweep off the powder for a flawless finish.

If you find that the baking is leaving skin dry spritz on a setting spray to create a dewier look. You will no longer have to worry about creases in your makeup or oily looking foundation and concealer all thanks to the wonderful baking technique!

How to transform your day look to a night look in 5 easy steps

There are often times that I find myself needing to get ready quickly after work for a night out. This does not leave me much time to redo my whole face, so I follow five simple steps to turn my look from daytime to nighttime.

  1. Create a bold lip– I use a natural beige colour on my lips for the most part throughout the day, so switching it up for night time with a bold red or deep mauve tone can drastically change my look. My go to nighttime colour is Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in the shade, Alison.
  2. For added drama try the Double Wispies to make lashes fuller

Layer on those lashes- I currently wear eyelash extensions but before I got them fake eyelashes were my favourite beauty product. Vamping up your lashes create a flirty look which is perfect for going out. My favourite eyelashes are the Ardell Demi Wispies.

  3. Buff out your eyeliner or change the shape- I myself do not tend to wear eyeliner during the day but for those who do there are two ways to change it up for the night. One way is to simply smudge or buff out the eyeliner you already have on to create a smoky eye. The second is to create a wing or cat eye for a sultrier stare. For a wing, my favourite is liquid liners such as Kat Von D Ink Liner, and a gel liner such as the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Liner to smudge into a smoky eye.
  4. Darken your eye shadow- Adding some bronze or earthy tones and creating a dramatic crease is a surefire way to make your daytime look a lot more dramatic. The eyeshadow palette that I would suggest is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette.
  5. Highlight, Highlight, Highlight- Nothing says wow more than a nice fierce glow atop of your cheekbones. Layer on two or three different highlighters to make all the difference in your look. The best highlighter palette for layering is definitely the Anastasia Beverly Hills That Glow Kit.

Kontouring- What products to use and where to apply it

Contouring or Kontouring as I like to call it has become a huge trend with makeup in recent years. Thanks to Kim Kardashian and her sisters their beautifully sculpted faces have become an inspiration to many women all over the world. Today we are going to review different products to contour with, and what areas of the face should have contouring vs. highlighting.

My favourite contour kit that is super pigmented and easy to use.

Where to contour and highlight your face:

It is important to note that contouring products should be matte and roughly two shades darker than your skin tone. The contour will help to shade areas that you want to sculpt or define. Contour should be applied to the hollows of your cheeks, forehead/temples, jawline and the side of the nose. Targeting these areas will help to slim out and sculpt your face. If your features are already defined do not apply the contour to those areas.

As for highlighting the product used should be two shades lighter than your skin tone. Highlighting will emphasise the areas of the face that naturally catch the light. The highlight should be applied to the cupid’s bow, your chin, under your eyes, the bridge of your nose, and your forehead.

Different types of contour products.

There are generally two different categories for contour products: cream and powder.

Cream contour products are best for when you want a dewy or full coverage look. Cream products can also be harder to use because many times people apply them too thickly. The finish is smoother with cream products but it is also important to note that cream products still need to be set with a powder.

Powder contour products are much easier to work with, especially if you are just learning how to contour. It is easier to blend and also allows you to build up the product little by little. This is also definitely the best option for those with oily skin.

Mix and Match Endless Possibilities

There are times when I do my makeup and I have in mind a lipstick shade that would perfectly complete my look, but I don’t have that colour in my kit. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Palette allows you to mix your own custom lipstick shade with the help of 5 primary colours and 13 various shades.

To a non-professional, the palette can be a bit overwhelming and I had to look to Instagram and Youtube for some inspiration when testing it out. Anastasia’s Instagram page posts a bunch of demonstrations from professional makeup artists which makes it easier to put the palette into use.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Palette, mixing plate and lip brush.

It is important to start simple when mixing lipstick shades and to try and stay within the same colour family. For example, I first tried a light nude shade with the Primary Yellow shade and it did not work at all. The yellow became very prominent in the mix and it did not look good on my lips.

It is also important to first mix and test the colour on another surface such as the mixing palette that Anastasia has provided with their product. Once the product touches your lips it will be harder to blend and mix colours together.

When choosing to experiment with a lip palette and colour mixing it is important to know that anything is fair game and you can’t be afraid to get creative! Creativity is the most vital part of creating custom shades.

After testing this palette, I can honestly say that I love it! The possibilities are endless, the lipsticks themselves are moisturizing and pigmented and it stayed on my lips for more than 6 hours with eating and drinking. If you’re getting bored of your everyday lipstick shades and are looking for something fresh and new I would highly recommend this palette.

4-Steps to Clear Skin

1.Cleanse. Washing your face twice a day will remove excess oils, dirt, and makeup that could otherwise cause skin to break out, cause dryness, blotchiness, oily skin and/or clogged pores. Not washing your face could also cause long-term problems such as wrinkles, blackheads, pimples and dead skin cells.

Clinique has a wide variety of skincare products for all skin types

2.Toning. Facial toners are important for all skin types because they help to wipe away any dead skin left on the surface and help to repair and smooth the skin’s surface. This step can be done both in the morning and at night by simply putting toner onto a cotton pad and gently sweeping it over your face and neck. If your skin is dry it is best to tone your face just once either in the morning or at night so that the toner does not cause further drying of the skin.

3.Moisturizing. This step should also be done twice a day and right after toning skin, as the skin is now prepped to receive the maximum benefits of moisturizer.  It is important to note that different skin types should be using different moisturizers:

Oily: Look for lotions instead of cream which contain salicylic acids.

Dry: Use cream since it is thicker and has more oil in it for maximum moisture.

Combination: Use a lotion with no acids. Drugstore moisturizers will do the trick such as              Neutrogena.

Normal: Can use just a thin layer of cream or moisturizerExfoliating. Exfoliating is important to help reduce acne and blemishes and to improve

4.Exfoliating. Exfoliating is important to help reduce acne and blemishes and to improve the  skin’s texture. This step should only be done once or twice a week so that over exfoliation does not occur. Some common methods of exfoliation include scrubs, exfoliating gloves, skin care brushes and face peels.

Welcome to Kontouring Karlee!

My obsession with makeup began about six years ago when I discovered the Kardashian family. The first thing I noticed about the Kardashian’s was their beauty and more specifically their makeup which was always flawless. I began to research products that they were using and the artists who were doing their makeup and I became obsessed. Youtube videos, Instagram’s, and facebook posts of the Kardashians getting their makeup done became my inspiration to learn how to apply makeup myself.

Although I am not a certified makeup artist, it is something that I enjoy doing for fun.  Not only am I getting myself ready for school and night’s out but also my friend’s.There is not a weekend that goes by that I don’t have my three roommates waiting in my room to get their makeup done.

Mario Dedivanovic is the makeup artist behind Kim Kardashian’s signature look and the person that I look up to. His tutorials on his blog and youtube channel have taught me

most of what I know including how to apply makeup and what products work really well. He is definitely my biggest inspiration behind this blog.

It is a common misconception in today’s society that girls don’t need makeup and it should be about natural beauty, or that if we do wear makeup it’s because we want to impress boys. However, I can tell you that I do not own 25 different shades of lipstick for a boy who doesn’t know the difference between MAC cosmetics Whirl lipstick and Kat Von D’s Lolita liquid lipstick. This blog is about the fun behind makeup, experimenting with new looks, testing new products, and talking about skincare. It is a passion of mine that I can’t wait to share. Enjoy!
